So, after being surrounded by people with dogs, and having wanted one for so long, I gave in on Sunday night and adopted a runty puppy I named Grits. She is the smallest of the litter that lived- like a third the size of the puppies my friends Johno and Tim adopted. But she is cute and energetic and eats a lot so hopefully she will do ok. Today she got her Parvo shot and more de-wormer, cause her belly was way distended. Now I have to see how well I do in terms of treating her right.

Also, the other thing is that right now I am feeding her nasty meat food. Because she is so fucking small and has barely made it this far in life I do not want to push it. Once she is bigger I will see about a vegan diet for a doggie.

Quote from Charles Mayo on vivisection:

“I abhor vivisection. It should at least be curbed. Better, it should be abolished. I know of no achievement through vivisection, no scientific discovery, that could not have been obtained without such barbarism and cruelty. The whole thing is evil.”

Morally wrong AND unuseful (more…)

There is a new book from AK Press by Bob Torres, Making A Killing: THe Political Economy of Animal Rights which seems like it is gonna be relevant to looking at the issue from a speciesism standpoint, and also in a broader sphere of ‘leftist’ politics. Says “contains key insights into the broad nature of domination, power, and hierarchy” also “explores intersections between human and animal oppressions in relation to the exploitative dynamics of capitalism” It comes out in Novemeber, I hope I have the time to read it.

I recently heard about this interesting project that I wanted to spread the word about, and I’m trying to keep updated on:

The non speciesist stance is that sentience suffices for moral consideration, legal rights, and EQUAL consideration. It provides equal protection for all sentient beings. (more…)

New Speciesist advocacy demands personhood for particular nonhumans- usually those exhibiting human like traits or genetic closeness to humans. When this happens, like with the Great Ape Project, speciesism is perpetuated. (more…)

New Speciesist Law exists only in theory. It would accord legal rights to only some nonhumans. One can imagine chimps and apes being accepted as having some rights. The article I found earlier today attempts to just that – to allow that chimps are close enough to humans that they should be considered as legal persons. (more…)

New Speciesist advocate only for certain non human animals that they determine to share traits with humans. (more…)

Dunayer says that animal rights books garble their own message when their language communicates speciesism. She also criticizes the use of cutsey puns and cliches about animals, which make a serious matter a joking matter. She says that the act of treating animals and their plight not seriously is speciesist. (more…)
