Melinda A. Novak

One of the scientists at UMass Amherst who is experimenting on primates (mostly Rhesus Monkeys right now) is Melinda Novak. One of the reasons why this campaign is so important is because of how long Melinda Novak has been experimenting on animals, and how much clout she has in that world. If we can get her to stop experimenting it will effect a lot more of the animal testing world.
Here is what the UMass faculty page on her says: (more…)

Jerrold S. Meyer

Another scientist at UMass AMherst who is experimenting on primates (as well as other species) is Jerrold S. Meyer. He has also collaborated with Novak on some papers. His experiments are particularly atrocious because they involve giving Rhesus Monkeys MDMA or Ecstasy (the illegal drug) to see how it damages them. These experiments are clearly unnecessary and cruel.
This is what the UMass website says about him: (more…)

Quote from Charles Mayo on vivisection:

“I abhor vivisection. It should at least be curbed. Better, it should be abolished. I know of no achievement through vivisection, no scientific discovery, that could not have been obtained without such barbarism and cruelty. The whole thing is evil.”

Hampshire Animal Liberation Advocacy, a student group I work with, organized and hosted the Smash the State, Crush the Cage 2007 conference on animal liberation and vivisection. I did not post about this before the conference happened because I was under so much stress about it that I did not have the mental capacity. What happened was our school (Hampshire college) became irate that we were planning this conference, and convinced that there was going to be violence or terrorism or something ridiculous like that. The entire science department met with us, and called our keynote speaker Jerry Vlasak a terrorist, accused him of ridiculous things, and said inviting him to campus was like inviting the grand wizard of the KKK to campus. Which was an entirely inappropriate and racist remark. The heads of 2 departments at school were the main people lobbying against us. They tried, repeatedly, to find ways to force us to cancel. In the end we won, but not after tremendous stress. We had the ACLU write the school. We had students sit in the president’s office. It was worth it though, because we made friends, had awesome workshops, and good times. It also has made a lot of people on campus question how free our speech is, and how autonomous student groups are.

I’m posting about it now because I am also going to post my notes from some of the workshops and want to give a frame of reference for them. Also I want to include some  of the things we wrote about it so I will not forget. (more…)
